"All were very pretty, of course; hand-selected by the king. Morghiad tried not to linger too long on them. He didn’t want to get a reputation."

Benay-gosa are female concubines to the Calidellian royal family. Their bond to royalty is considered a valuable commodity, and if they break it they are submitted for execution. The women can be selected from any level of society, rich or poor, and any children they bear are considered legitimate heirs.

Traditionally, they wear scarves of a single colour which is selected by their master. King Acher's benay-gosa wear red.

When a Calidellian king dies, his benay-gosa are usually adopted by one of his male relatives. Failing that, they are executed and buried with the king.
